I consider myself a bit of a film buff. I’m continually making short films to share with my friends and I’m always watching videos on my phone. Recently, a friend of mine sent me a link to this website that puts together the top 10 lists of apps in different categories, and the one he sent me was for video players. I tend to use the same video player app on my phone, but he insisted that he’d had good luck with the apps ranked on this site in the past, so I decided to give a few of them a try.
Video Player Apps
I’m so glad I listened to him because – holy cow! – My video player quality – including video subtitles – just got upgraded by 10,000 points. Everything I want to watch – including my videos – is way more precise and faster than before. Best of all, I’m not just limited to one app anymore – I now have several to choose from depending on what kind of content or features I’m looking for.
I decided to select my favorite three and give you guys a quick rundown on each of the apps in the hopes that, if you happen to be looking for a video player app for yourself. This will be a super quick way for you to find one that perfectly fits your needs without having to do all of the research – consider it my gift to you!
Power Media Player – Rating: 4.3, Downloads: 1M
Power Media Player is great because you have the ability to tweak the image and sound qualities of your videos with a couple of taps. You can adjust the contrast and color balance as well as use an audio equalizer, giving you complete control over how well you enjoy your videos. Plus, dozens of video and audio formats are supported in-app, so you don’t need to worry about making complicated file conversions.
Power Media Player doesn’t have a tutorial or manual to guide you through every feature, so users are sort of left to figure everything out on their own. For me, I prefer learning as I go, but this can be frustrating for users who don’t have a lot of time.
Pros: Adjust video and audio, control visual and audio balances, don’t need to make file conversions
Cons: Does not have a tutorial or manual of any kind
Overall: Great for hands-on video editing as long as you don’t mind learning through trial and error
PlayerXtreme Media Player – Rating: 4.6, Downloads: 500K
PlayerXtreme Media Player has a direct play function which lets you watch videos on any format without having to wait for them to convert; super convenient for people (like me) who struggle in the patience department. You can watch and stream videos as well as listen to music across platforms so that you can bring your favorites with you everywhere. And, if you have videos you want to be able to access quickly, you can also create folders for all the content you want right away.
PlayerXtreme Media Player does have ads, so if that’s something that bothers you, you’re going to want to keep that in mind. On the other hand, the ads mean you’re able to use the app for free, so it ultimately just depends on what is more worth it to you: no cost or no ads.
Pros: Play videos on any format, stream videos & music from any platform, create custom folders for quick access
Cons: It does have ads
Overall: Access all your favorite videos – from all your favorite sites – quickly but expect the occasional ad
VLC for Android – Rating: 4.4, Download: 100M
VLC for Android lets you play all of your video files seamlessly – one of the reasons it’s one of my favorites. You can easily adjust the audio and brightness at the touch of a button. Not to mention, there are also equalizers and filters you can manipulate to make your viewing experience top-notch. Plus, you can use an ultra-handy widget to make the audio sound crisp and clear in every video you play.
Unfortunately, there’s been a recent update to the app which has caused the media library to duplicate and delete certain files randomly. I’ve seen messages from the developers saying that they are on it and that a new update with a fix should be released soon, but this is something you may want to keep in mind.
Pros: You can adjust and clarify audio, adjust brightness, and add filters
Cons: A recent update has made the media library slightly unstable
Overall: Manually change the sound and appearance of your videos, though a glitch in the media library is currently being worked on

I am so psyched to have all of these fantastic apps in my back pocket now – literally! These have been more than just useful, they’ve altered the way I watch videos on my phone.
