Having said that here are seven steps you can take to study long hours without getting overly tired or drowsy:Prioritize your schedule: take up difficult topics early in the day. Exercise. Steal a nap. Eat to maintain energy levels. Conserve your mental energy. Take regular breaks. If possible, study/ work in daylight.
How much time should you spend on a college class?
In higher education, a well-established rule of thumb holds that students should devote two hours of study time for every hour of class time. Assuming a full-time load of fifteen credit hours, students adhering to this standard should spend thirty hours per week studying.
Is taking 16 credits too much?
15 is considered the normal course load (~120units to graduate, 4 years, 2 semesters/year = 15units/semester). 12 is usually the minimum required to be considered a full time student (and if you withdraw from a class, you’re below the minimum and you lose a lot of your financial aid). 16 is perfectly fine.

Is taking 20 credits too much?
Your milage may vary, but it all depends on how well you did last semester and how well you think you’ll improve. I’d still recommend taking 20 and dropping one if it feels to be too much. That’s what a lot of smart students do at my school.
